April 4: What's blooming and growing

In 2021, I am sharing weekly updates of what is growing and blooming in my garden.

For the last two years I have been working on this spot out back. I plant more glory of the snow each fall and keep expanding the garden beds. About three years ago, this was a spot where I had a raised bed, a cold frame and a pop up greenhouse (the cheap kind). The greenhouse met its end when a winter storm dropped a tree limb on top of it, the cold frame began to rot after being in the ground for 7+ years, and the raised bed was blocking the path of the shed. So I removed everything and began to rehabilitate the area and the soil. It's getting there!

What else is happening this week in the garden:

• The white forsythia (Abeliophyllum distichum) is blooming in the back garden, and the yellow is blooming out front. But the yellow is lacking in blooms this year.
• The plum trees are beginning to show flower buds. 
• Tulip and grape hyacinth leaves are emerging from the soil.
• The elderberries are putting out new growth.

I garden in Zone 6b. The average cold weather minimum temperature for my growing region is -5 to 0 degrees Fahrenheit (-20.6 to -17.8 degrees Celsius).
