March 22: What's growing and blooming

In 2021, I am sharing weekly updates of what is growing and blooming in my garden.

It's time for crocuses of all colors. The blooms stay closed during colder temperatures, but on March 20, we had sunshine and warmth, and then the honeybees magically appeared. I shared some footage below — take a moment to enjoy the birdsong and the hum of the bees.

What else is happening this week in the garden:

  • Winter aconite popped up over the weekend with their bright cheery yellow flowers.
  • Hellebores are beginning to bloom. I started to cut back last season's leaves, and I'm about halfway through.
  • Daffodils continue to emerge from the soil.
  • Witch hazel is still in bloom after all.
  • I purchased pansies for adding to spring containers.
  • I took soil temperatures today, and multiple spots in the garden and in containers are registering between 45 and 50 degrees F — which means I can start planting pea seeds this week!

I garden in Zone 6b. The average cold weather minimum temperature for my growing region is -5 to 0 degrees Fahrenheit (-20.6 to -17.8 degrees Celsius).
