Blooming now: Winter Aconite (Eranthis Hyemalis)

 

The tiny, cheerful yellow flowers of Winter Aconite (Eranthis Hyemalis) are beginning to pop up in the front and back garden. It's native to Europe and Asia and in the buttercup family. It's one of the earliest spring blooming bulbs that also tolerates black walnut toxicity in the soil. It does well in well-drained soil in sun to part shade, and will eventually go dormant as the season advances. They usually appear here in Connecticut right after most of the snowdrops begin to bloom.
