For Mother's Day, give mom lilacs from the garden

When I was a child, my grandfather would cut his lilacs for Mother's Day and put them in vases for my mother to take home. We would walk back four blocks in Queens to home with a glorious bouquet of lilacs that made everyone stare. Now whenever I see lilacs in bloom, I think of him and her and that lovely Mother's Day tradition.

However, cutting branches and placing them in water isn't the only thing you need to do to have a magnificent display. The trick to keeping them from wilting is to smash the ends of the stems with a hammer so the water can be drawn up. (This can also be done with pruners if you don't have a hammer at the ready.)
