A fun task to do in the "off-season" is winter sowing seeds in plastic containers.
In my area, there are three types of milkweed seeds that can be started this way:
- Common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca)
- Butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa)
- Red milkweed (Asclepias incarnata)
The milkweed seeds need periods of stratification (varying temperature and moisture) in order to sprout. The plastic container provides this environment while protecting the seeds through the winter.
In the video below I share the steps I take to sow milkweeds seeds. (You can sow other seeds this way too, including perennial flowers.)
